What a controversy it is! Sylvia Browne is certainly one of the most notable psychic celebrities in the limelight today. She appears to be one of those souls about whom one can avow, “you either love her or you hate her.” Sylvia’s supporters depict her as highly esteemed, sincere, and inspiring, while her detractors choose words such as despicable, a hoaxer, and a con artist.

Sylvia Browne’s journey began in Missouri in 1936. From her accounts, she was seeing psychic visions as a toddler. In conducting psychic readings, Sylvia claims that she receives information from God and she strives to translate this information clearly in relaying this insight to her clients. She maintains she is able to read a client’s etheric blueprint which becomes an additional source of information relevant to their life experiences, that she can provide to her customers.

Sylvia Browne has acheived best selling author status, is a regular guest on television talk shows, and hosts her own radio show through Hay House. She continues to provide personal psychic readings both in person and via the telephone. In addition, Sylvia operates the Sylvia Browne Corporation and has launched a church in California, called the Society of Novus Spiritus.

Whether one believes in psychic powers or not, the debate about Sylvia’s legitimacy has been ongoing since she emerged into the public eye. James Randi, an outspoken critic, proposes that Sylvia is in no way a psychic, but a cold reader, which is a technique that portrays the aura of clairvoyance when it is in reality nothing more than a description of the subject’s clearly observable characteristics. Anti-Sylvia Browne websites and forums flood the internet with a pool of negativity surrounding her. These greatly eclipse the proponents of Sylvia and her work.

Although an extensive record listing Sylvia’s errors is readily available, it is truly difficult to turn up evidence of her successes, aside from broad claims found on her own website. Sylvia Browne and her supporters assert that she is predominantly successful in her predictions while assisting on police cases. They stress that she is particularly successful in predicting future events likely to occur in someone’s life.

Unfortunately for Sylvia Browne and her boosters, a recent high visiblility case of a kidnapped boy has once more created doubt about her legitimacy. This is the story of the 11 year old boy who was kidnapped 4 years ago and was recently found to be alive, living near his family’s home. A few months after the boy was abducted, Sylvia relayed that he was dead, and described the perpetrator in detail along with the location of the boy’s body. This was clearly wrong, and along side several other cases in which Sylvia has been proven inaccurate in her foretelling of events has fueled her critics’ mudslinging. Sylvia continues publicly to champion her work.

Despite the ups and downs in her fifty-year career, Sylvia Browne psychic has managed to entertain, and in some capacity, to serve, admirers and supporters throughout the decades.
